Search had a baseline. Clicks, impressions and average position moved on a known cadence against a handful of announced updates a year. Answer engines have no equivalent today, and reporting on them as though they do produces confident nonsense.
Through 2026 the answer surfaces have changed repeatedly in how an answer is composed and displayed, rather than in how results are ranked. Client visibility shifts in directions the accounts themselves do not explain, separately from the announced core updates in the same window.
Composition changes do not arrive as announcements. Nobody publishes a note saying answers are now shorter, or that fewer sources are named, or that a particular format is being preferred. The change simply appears in the output, and every visibility figure measured before it is now measuring a different thing.
A trend line whose measurement surface moved is a new line, and it says so
If the baseline is unstable, a twelve month visibility target is not a specification. It is a wish with a number attached. The honest form of a target here is a coverage figure and a structural one: how many of the questions buyers ask have a page built to answer them, and how many of those pages can actually be crawled and rendered.
Both of those are inside your control, and neither one shifts when a platform changes how it composes an answer. Report the visibility figure alongside them, with its caveat, rather than instead of them.
